|Musical library of the St.-Petersburg Philharmonic Society
Musical library of the St.-Petersburg Philharmonic Society is one of the oldest musical collection of Russia. It started to be formed in 1882 from the moment of creation of the Court orchestra, nowadays ST.PETERSBURG PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA. The library of the Philharmonic Society totals 150 thousand units of storage and more than17 thousand from them are unique autographs. The main part of the collection are notes, books about music, autographs, musical periodical press, also a collection of posters and programs of concerts of the Grand and Small halls since 1921 in which all concert life of the Philharmonic Society is reflected. Approximately 60% of the collection are pre-revolutionary editions. Among especially significant values of library there are notes with autographs of J.Field, J.Strauss, P.Tchaikovsky, G.Mahler, A.Schoenberg, D.Shostakovich, S.Slonimsky, E.Mravinsky, Y.Temirkanov. The library also stores a greater collection of photos with autographs of great musicians: B.Walter, H.Knappertsbusch, G.Abendrot, H.von Karajan, S.Richter, M.Rostropovich, Y.Menuhin, M.Yansons, etc. M.Jansons after his father, leading conductor, Arvid Yansons passed away presented as a gift to library the scores of his father. For years of existence of the library many items have strongly worn out and demand significant restoration. Unique exhibit of library, so-called "The Gold Book" since the middle of 20th years of the last century are collected of rarest autographs of great musicians about the Philharmonic Society and its orchestra headed today by Jury Temirkanov. In "The Gold Book" have records by composers Glazunov, Prokofiev, Honegger, Penderezki, musicians Gorovitz, Jasha Heifetz, Menuhin, Richter, Sir Solti, Rozhdestvensky, Rostropovich, Vishnevskaya, Sokolov, Virssaladze. At the moment library has got some computer equipment: three computers, one printer, scanner and network equipment was required. The purpose of the computerization is to create the electronic catalog; library collection will be opened for a wide range of users and also will provide an access to catalogs of other libraries. Our project supported by grants from: comity of culture of City Government and EMC – leading manufacturer of data storage system and donation from: “Nevsky Zavod” and “Sevkabel Holding”.
